Winning Start for Spartans

Spartans who had Charlie Thompson stepping in for the missing Will Barron & Brandon Stones starting goal got their season of to a winning start by overcoming Titans 8-1 in Telford on Sunday evening.

Nick Manning scored an unassisted goal with only 16 seconds on the clock but it wasn’t until later in the period that Spartans were able to fully stamp their authority on the game against a very hard working Telford side that were pushing Spartans all the way. Coupled with some inconsistent refereeing it made the game pretty even so it was a relief when Tom Humphries tucked his chance away on 18.45, assisted Dan Taylor to make it 2-0. From the face off, Andy Cook found Jonathon Kirk who fired in a great shot on goal to make it 3-0 to Spartans which was the score at the period break.

Spartans were in control for most of second period looking dangerous on the attack & pretty solid in defence which they had to be at times, Telford continued to battle away in what was surprisingly a flowing game despite the continuous halts to play with some suspect calls oin both teams. However, Spartans did dominate large chunks of the period which saw Jonathon Kirk add his second on 25.04, assisted Nick Manning & Ollie Barron. Titans hit back with a well taken goal by Ryan Stanton after being set up by Michael Roden & Karol Jets on 26.45. Spartans response was immediate, Scotty Morris setting Ollie Barron up to score a great goal to make it 5-1 on 27.01. Thankfully Spartans had a good cushion as they were put under pressure from some good play from Titans & more suspect refereeing both in calls made & those missed. Spartans did overcome this threat & put themselves firmly in the driving seat when Ollie Barron scored from Jonathon Kirk on 38.17 to make it 6-1. Spartans did score another but it was washed out by the referee as he deemed that the puck had not fully crossed the line before the hooter sounded. A very close call but he was suitably placed to make it.

It was 7-1 to Spartans within the first minute of the third period, Jonathon Kirk claiming his hat-trick on 40.28, assisted Ross Jordan & Ollie Barron. The game had settled down a bit more this period with Spartans in control but credit to Titans, they never gave up but couldn’t muster enough to breach a solid looking defence and when called upon their defence too were ensuring that Spartans didn’t increase their lead with Elliott Folley, Titans netminder making some brave saves. He couldn’t do anything to stop Charlie Thompson scoring on 50.28, assisted by Dan Taylor & Nick Whyatt. Both teams created chances, the best of which fell to Spartans but there was to be no more goals with Spartans bagging their first win of the season.

Final Score: Telford Titans 1 – Sheffield Spartans 8
