Wild Women Put In Battling Display Against Milton Keynes Falcons
The Widnes Wild women’s team’s roller-coaster season of transition and new player development continued with a highly entertaining and hard fought 1-4 defeat at home to the Milton Keynes Falcons at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.
The Wild women – many of whom had never played a competitive game before the start of this season – are improving with every game they play and are certainly heading in the right direction and, if points were given out for commitment and enthusiasm, they would be top of the league by now.
They matched their more experienced opponents for long spells of the game and were unfortunate not to be able to convert more of their possession into shots and goals.
Milton Keynes took the lead on 6 minutes and doubled the advantage 7 minutes later to lead 0-2 at the first period break. The second period was goal-less and the longer the score remained at 0-2, the more it felt as if the Wild women might be able to stage a fightback.
The Falcons scored again on 49 minutes to make the score 0-3 but then Widnes finally got the breakthrough they had long been threatening and, on 53 minutes, top scorer Sav Sumner made a break from the half way line and fired a rocket shot under the MK netminder.
This lifted the team and they swarmed forward trying to push for another goal. Unfortunately, this left them open at the back and the Falcons scored their 4th goal on 55 minutes, rounding off the scoring for the evening.
The Sarah Macnaughtan Memorial awards for most Most Valuable Player went to netminder Stephanie Drinkwater for Widnes and Kirsten Noble for Milton Keynes.
After the game, Wild women player coach Amanda Williams said:
“Our preparation for the game was spot on – playing games on back to back weekends really helps. Again, we ran 4 lines and the girls should be pleased with their performance earning the 4-1 result, especially given that 6 months ago in MK we lost 10-3.”
“We need to work on upping our shots for and reducing shots against. Had we managed to get our goal earlier in the game it could’ve been a different story.”
The Wild women are next in action on Sunday 7th April when they entertain the Bracknell Firebees in the Women’s Premier League at Planet Ice Widnes.
