Wild Women Grab Point After Hills Hat-Trick
Wild’s Katie Hills (#13) scored a superb hat trick against the Firebees
The Widnes Wild women’s team picked up their first home point of the season in a thrilling 4-4 draw against the Bracknell Firebees in the Women’s Premier League at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.
The Firebees were making their first ever visit to Widnes after winning promotion from Division 1 South last season, and look set to qualify for the end of season play offs in their first season in this division. They arrived on the back of a 4-game winning streak, having already beaten the Wild women 6-1 down in Berkshire back in February and, in their last game, trounced the league’s bottom team Nottingham Vipers 22-0. The Wild team are in transition this season, having introduced a number of new players to the squad so a 4-4 draw was, in fact, a very creditable outcome.
The game was very close throughout with both teams having numerous chances. The first goal of the game went to the visitors in the 9th minute, scored by Louise Beresford who is a GB under 18 international and also plays for the Bracknell Queen Bees Elite League team, but the score was levelled in the 16th minute with a fine strike by the Wild captain Charlene Chapman and the score remained at 1-1 at the first period break.
The Firebees edged back into the lead just 80 seconds after the restart with a second goal from Beresford but that was countered with a powerplay strike from the Wild’s Katie Hills with just 3 minutes left of the period.
The Firebees took a 2-goal lead in the third period – with both being scored by Clair Fay – a highly experienced former Queen Bees player with 90 matches under her belt at top tier level – which left the Wild women with lots to do in the last 10 minutes. The Wild’s Katie Hills scored two sensational goals – giving her a hat-trick on the night – to tie the score with 5 minutes left, but try as they might, the home side were unable to find a late winner.
The shared points from the game see the Firebees move up into 4th place in the Women’s Premier League table while the Wild women now have daylight between themselves and bottom club Nottingham.
That was the Wild women’s last home game of the season. They have two away games left to play – against Milton Keynes Falcon on 15th April and Chelmsford Cobras on 6th May.
