Wild Weekend Preview

Wild’s Lee Kemp (#15) celebrates a goal against Sheffield Senators in the 4-3 home win back in September.

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild have two tough games this weekend as they continue the quest for their first ever Laidler Division title, travelling to Coventry to face the NIHL Blaze on Saturday before taking on Sheffield Senators at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.

Widnes have already beaten Coventry three times this season but the Blaze have picked up some useful results in recent weeks – including two wins over second place Sheffield Senators just before Christmas and again last weekend – so they are in good form at present and should not be underestimated.

The Senators are clear on points in second place ahead of the chasing pack but they have had an up and down season so far, beating fellow title challengers Telford Tigers 2 on one day and then losing to mid table Coventry on another. The Wild have beaten Sheffield twice this season so far back in early September and the two remaining meetings between these teams may well go some way to determining which side of the Pennines the League title finally ends up on.

Widnes currently have an 8 point lead over Sheffield, having played the same number of games. Telford and Hull are just behind the Senators with games in hand over the top two and, with all the top teams still to play each other again, there is a lot more competitive hockey left in this season to look forward to.

The Senators boast the Laidler Division’s leading points scorer so far this season in Thomas Humphries who has 23+35=58 in 19 games. The Wild’s Jakub Hajek is in second place in the scoring tables with 27+23=50 and is the league’s top goal scorer, while Ollie Barron is third with 21+28=49.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s games, Wild Player Coach Ollie Barron said:

“It’s a huge weekend, facing a 2 good teams in Coventry and Sheffield. Blaze have had some very impressive results, and each time we have played them, I have been impressed with their work rate. On Sunday we are back on home ice to face Sheffield, currently in second place, which will be a fast paced physical game. I hope to see as many fans as possible cheering us on this weekend both in Coventry and Widnes.”

The Wild travel to Coventry to play the NIHL Blaze this Saturday 12th January and are then at home for the first time in 2019 on Sunday 13th when they take on Sheffield Senators at Planet Ice Widnes. Face off is at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45.
