Wild Travel To Altrincham – Match Preview With Ollie Barron
The RTL sponsored Widnes Wild are on the road again this weekend with a tricky trip to northwest rivals Altrincham Aces at Silver Blades Altrincham this Saturday 14th January.
Games between the two near neighbours are always eventful – back to back friendly matches in August elicited a huge penalty total and the 3-3 draw in the first league meeting between the two teams saw a fight break out during the post-match handshakes – so an entertaining evening is certainly on the cards for Wild fans who are able to make the journey.
The last meeting between the two sides – a 4-2 win at Widnes – was played on a knife-edge for most of the game with the Wild only making sure of the win with an empty net goal in the dying seconds of the match so there is a lot of pride to play for as well as the all-important Laidler Conference points.
The Aces actually topped the league table for a brief period at the start of the season but have had mixed fortunes since then. However, they have lost only once in their last 7 games and currently sit just 2 points off a play-off place in 5th place in the table.
Talking first about the Wild’s win at Coventry last Saturday, player coach Ollie Barron said:
“Last Saturday’s win against the Blaze keeps our run of wins together. I don’t feel we played particularly well, however, I was happy to pick up the 2 points. We had large periods of puck possession but the Blaze goalie was in good form. It was great to see Karl Niamatali back on the ice in a Wild shirt. He started the season really well and I delighted to have him back on the ice with the boys.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s game at Altrincham, Barron said:
“We go into the Aces game in good form. We know this series against them is tight and it will be a tough physical game.”
“We need to take the remainder of the season game-by-game, working on specific situations for our opponents. Altrincham have a good squad and I expect a hard fought game – one where we will be looking to continue our good form.”
The RTL sponsored Widnes Wild play Altrincham Aces away at Silver Blades Altrincham this Saturday – 6.15pm face off. They are next at home a week on Sunday – 22nd January 2017 – when they entertain Sheffield Senators at Silver Blades Widnes in a 5.30pm face off game.
