Wild Out To Maul Bulldogs In Top Of The Table Clash – Wild Women Away To Sheffield
The Wild’s leading scorer for the season so far Jakub Hajek scored the winner against Bradford in the 7-6 OT win in September.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild have a tricky away game this weekend when they travel to face current league leaders Bradford Bulldogs in West Yorkshire on Saturday – 5.00pm face off.
The Bulldogs have struggled in recent years but have a very strong bench this season and they remain top of the Laidler Division table with 9 points from their 7 games to date. When the Wild played Bradford at Planet Ice Widnes a few weeks ago, it was a very close game which could easily have gone either way. The score was level at 6-6 after three periods and the Wild snatched a dramatic winner in overtime.
Former Deeside, Blackburn Eagles and Altrincham Aces import Tomas Mitrik scored 3+1 for the Bulldogs in the game at Widnes and he is the leading points scorer in the Laidler Division at this early stage of the season with 11+8. Another Bradford player who can be a game-changer is netminder Philip Pearson who played out of his skin in the last two meetings between the Wild and Bradford last season. He stopped 52 of the 59 shots that he faced in the most recent game and has a 91.60 save % for the season so far.
Having won their first 4 games of the season, Bradford have since lost their last three. The Wild have won four from six with their 22-2 win over the Blackburn Hawks development team last Sunday coming as a welcome relief after back to back away defeats.
Whoever wins the game on Saturday will be top of the league table – for one day, at least, until the Sunday games are played.
Following the away game at Bradford, the Wild are away to the Blackburn Hawks development team next Saturday 20th October. They are next at home on Sunday 21st October when they take on the Telford Tigers at Planet Ice Widnes – 5.30pm face off.
The Widnes Wild women’s team are in action this Saturday 13th October when they travel to play the Sheffield Shadows in the Women’s Premier League.
The Shadows were relegated from the Elite League at the end of last season and drew their first WPL game 6-6 at home to newly promoted Whitley Bay Squaws. The Wild Women lost their first game of the new season 10-2 away to Milton Keynes Falcons but iced a host of players new to competitive ice hockey.
Their first home game of the season is on Sunday 9th December when they will face the Whitley Bay Squaws in a 5.30pm face off at Planet Ice Widnes.
