Wild Host Senators In Season Opener
New netminder Luke Wilson Owen had an impressive debut against Sutton last Sunday.
The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild open their 2018/19 Laidler Division campaign this Sunday 9th September when they take on the Sheffield Senators at Planet Ice Widnes.
The Wild had a good run-out with their new look team last Sunday when they lost 2-9 to Sutton Sting in a pre-season challenge match but, with Sutton preparing to play in the higher Moralee Division this season, it is unlikely that Widnes will meet another side quite as strong as that again all season.
Having said that, the impressive ice hockey factory that is Sheffield always produces strong teams and the Senators were actually the Wild’s bogey team last season – winning 3 of their 4 league meetings and ending up with the best playing record against Widnes of all the teams in the division, despite not managing to reach the play offs themselves.
The Wild iced 8 new players in the game against Sutton and, along with the returning players from last season’s Play Off winning team, the roster is looking very impressive indeed. The team’s stated aim is to finally secure that elusive first league title, having finished in second place in the table for the past 3 seasons, so it will be fascinating to see how the new 2018/19 Laidler Division season develops.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild entertain Sheffield Senators in their first Laidler Division fixture this Sunday 9th September at Planet Ice Widnes. Face off is at 5.30 and doors open at 4.45 pm.
