Wild Face Tough Weekend Against Senators and Bulldogs
Wild’s Lee Kemp scores against the Senators in the first home game of the season.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild have two games this weekend – travelling to face Sheffield Senators at iceSheffield on Saturday (4pm face off) before entertaining current league leaders Bradford Bulldogs at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday – 5.30pm face off.
The Wild beat Sheffield 4-3 in a closely fought game two weeks ago at home and will be keen to get an early season double over the team that had the best playing record against them in the Laidler Division last season. The Senators won 3 of the 4 games between the teams – including twice in Widnes – and a hard battle is to be expected. Both teams have only played that one game so far in the new season so it is difficult to judge relative strengths at this early stage, but a visit to iceSheffield is never easy.
Sunday’s opponents Bradford Bulldogs currently head the Laidler Division table with 3 wins from their first three games. All of those games have been away from home and they have seen off Deeside Dragons, Blackburn Hawks 2 and – most impressively – Hull Jets.
Former Deeside, Blackburn Eagles and Altrincham Aces import Tomas Mitrik is their leading points scorer at this early stage of the season with 7+4 in three games and will be a player to keep an eye out for on Sunday.
Another Bradford player who can be a game-changer is netminder Philip Pearson who played out of his skin in the two previous meetings between the Wild and Bradford, two games which the Bulldogs won in dramatic fashion going completely against the form book at the time.
The Wild will be keen to knock the Bulldogs off their lofty perch on Sunday as a 4-point weekend could put the Widnes side top of the table, depending on other results.
The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild play face Sheffield Senators away at iceSheffield this Saturday 22nd September and are then at home the day after – Sunday 23rd – to Bradford Bulldogs at Planet Ice Widnes. The game faces off at 5.30pm and doors open at 4.45.
