Wiggy, Wiggy, Wiggy!!!
The RTL sponsored Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the return of fan favourite Geoff Wigglesworth. The Wild #12 has signed on for another year in the Black, White & Gold Wild colours to join returnees Scott Mckenzie, Greg Ruxton, Tom McDonald, Shaun Dippnall Ken Armstrong and Kieran Strangeway as well as new signings Ethan & Jonah Armstrong.
Wigglesworth who turns 32 in July had an outstanding season finishing fifth in the Laidler Conference scoring charts with a career best of 57 points (34 goals & 23 assists). After such a great season, Wigglesworth was voted Best Forward and Coaches player at the end of season awards evening. Coach Mckenzie felt that Wigglesworth was one player he couldn’t afford to lose;
“Geoff for me is one of the most under-rated players in the NIHL2 Laidler Conference. He had a pretty tough start to the season but once he found his feet and gained confidence, no-one could stop him. Not many people know this but Geoff hasn’t been playing hockey for long, so to be in the top five points scorers in the league is a massive achievement and something he should be very proud of. I am really looking for a more senior role for Geoff this year, he is a natural leader, someone who cares very much for the Widnes Wild Ice Hockey Club and we are very glad to have him and his wonderful family back with us for at least another season.â€
The return of Wigglesworth means that the RTL Widnes Wild have secured 3 of the top 5 points scorers from the league last season. Scott Mckenzie (128 points) lead the league whilst Shaun Dippnall (78 points) was 3rd and Wigglesworth (57 points) was 5th. This is sure to be a massive boost for a Wild team that is looking to secure its first piece of silver-ware in the club’s short history.
Wigglesworth himself is happy with his work from 2015/16 season but believes there is still more to come;
“I feel very privileged to be asked back to a club with such a great family feeling surrounding it and I have never felt so comfortable and happy playing ice hockey anywhere else. I hope the fans are happy to see that I am back, I am sure they know how much it meant to me personally wearing the Wild logo on my chest, I will continue to give everything I have to the cause next season. Although some would say I had a good year, I know I definitely have more to give, I want to continue to improve and learn in certain areas and hopefully by doing that I will come back even stronger by the time pre-season comes.â€
