Weekend Preview: 2nd & 3rd March

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild can take another step closer to their first ever league title this weekend but, first of all, they need to overcome the highly significant threat of the Hull Jets when they meet this Sunday 3rd March at Planet Ice Widnes.

Hull are currently third in the league table and, along with second place Telford Tigers, they are one of the teams who could – mathematically, at least – still pip the Wild to the league title, so this game will have huge significance for both teams.

The three previous games against Hull this season have all been incredibly close. Hull won the first encounter away on Humberside 4-2 back in October after Widnes had taken an early 0-2 lead and then the Wild narrowly beat the Jets 3-1 in the return match at the end of November. The last meeting saw an incredibly tense 0-1 win for the Wild in Hull so Sunday’s game looks likely to be a very close run thing.

Hull have won 5 of their last 6 games – including a 1-6 win away at fellow title hopefuls Telford Tigers – so are not to be taken lightly. Widnes have already qualified for the end of season play offs and Hull are in a good position to do likewise but a win for the Wild on Sunday would put an end to any lingering title ambitions that the Jets may still hold.

The YKK-sponsored Widnes Wild take on the Hull Jets this Sunday 3rd March at Planet Ice Widnes. The game faces at 5.30 and doors open at 4.45.

The Widnes Wild women’s team head into somewhat unknown territory this weekend as they travel north of the border to take on the Solway Sharks ladies team in a challenge match this Sunday 3rd March – 5pm face off.

The Wild women are having a difficult transitional season in the EIHA Women’s Premier League with a mostly inexperienced side picking up valuable match experience as they go along. The Sharks ladies play in the lower Division One North but are top of that league so will still represent stiff opposition.

Looking ahead to the game, Wild women player coach Amanda Williams said: “We’re looking forward to travelling to Solway – it’s a great rink to play on. The Sharks are currently occupying top spot in D1N and should give us a good, competitive game. We’ll be looking to build on what we’ve practised in training, hopefully control the puck a bit more and try players in different positions. It’s good to have a challenge game the week before our next league fixture as well, as we usually have a few weeks to wait game to game.”

The Wild women are away to the Solway Sharks ladies this Sunday and are at home next Sunday 10th March when they take on the Milton Keynes Falcons at Planet Ice Widnes – 5.30pm face off.

The Wild Academy Under 13 team are away to Deeside this Saturday 2nd March – 4.45pm face off – and then at home on Saturday 9th March when they take on Nottingham U13s at Planet Ice Widnes. That game starts at 6.50pm and admission is free.
