Weekend Preview: 23rd & 24th February

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild will be keen to bounce back after their home defeat to Telford Tigers last weekend when they make the short trip to face the Altrincham Aces at the Planet Ice rink in Altrincham this Saturday – 7.30pm face off.

Games between these two local rivals are always very keenly contested and there is extra spice this time around as the Wild are homing in on their first ever league title and the Aces will, obviously, be keen to throw a spanner in the works.

The Wild have beaten Altrincham twice this season already – 6-1 at home and 6-3 away – and the remaining two meetings between the two teams, away on Saturday and then at home in Widnes on 17th March, will play a huge part in deciding the destination of the Laidler Division crown.

The Aces have had a poor season by their own standards and sit second bottom of the league table, having won only 9 of their 24 games. They did, however, give title contenders Hull Jets a huge scare in their game last Sunday by leading 3-0 at the end of the first period before eventually running out of steam in the latter stages to lose 5-8.

With former Wild players Phil Crosby, Kyle Haslam and Sheldon Cassidy in their line up, the Aces will be keen to put in a good showing on Saturday and, with the league’s top goal scorer Jakub Hajek and Wild junior academy coach Mikey Gilbert having previously made the journey in the opposite direction, Widnes will be similarly keen to put one over on their near neighbours and get their title challenge back on track.

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild play Altrincham Aces away this Saturday 23rd February, 7.30pm face off, and are then at home the following Sunday 3rd March when they take on the Hull Jets in an important top of the table clash.

The Wild Academy Under 13s team are in action on Sunday 24th February when they take on the Deeside Dragons U13 team at Planet Ice Widnes. Face off is at 4.20pm and admission is free.
