Watson: Winning Trophies A Must
ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars today reveal the return of Mark Watson to complete their netminding duo following the signing of James Flavell last week.
Still only 22 years old, Watson is starting his sixth season with the Billingham senior team having come up through the ranks at Newcastle and Whitley before joining up with the Northern Stars for their final season. Instrumental in the Stars’ successful Northern Cup triumph last year Watson put in some match-winning performances between the pipes, not least in the penalty shootout win at Solway in November and despite suffering with an ankle injury that troubled him for much of the campaign. Watson cuts an imposing figure for a goaltender at 6’4″, his size an advantage when it comes to hustling opposition forwards out of his crease!
Watson been successfully sharing netminding duties with Flavell for some time now, and is looking forward to resuming their partnership for the coming season:
“Personally it was a bit of a frustrating season for me last year. I struggled with an ankle injury for a lot of the season and at times was not as consistent as maybe I would have liked to have been. However on the positive side, the run of performances in the Cup was very pleasing and I hope to take that into this year. It’s always good to have two goalies competing together and keeping each other on our toes. Over the last few years I think it’s benefited the team massively by being able to regularly split some of the workload so hopefully that can continue on into this year.
The Cup was huge for us last year, but on the flip side our League campaign was very disappointing. A lack of consistency cost us a lot, as well as dropping points in games that we dominated. The ambition for this coming season has to be a minimum of a playoff spot and definitely some silverware – whether that be in the league, playoffs or cup we need to be winning trophies!”
