Watkins threatens changes at Tigers after double defeats
Tom Watkins is set to make changes at Telford Tigers, after watching his side concede 14 goals in just two games.
Sunday night’s 7-2 loss at home to Guildford Flames followed a 7-0 defeat to Basingstoke Bison the day before.
Those defeats mean Telford share seventh place in the EPL with Sheffield, following a previous run of five wins in six games.
Head coach Watkins, whose squad again out-shot their opponents, is now likely to turn his attention to the transfer market.
He said: “We created chances tonight, but we’re not taking enough advantage of them. There are areas in this team that are putting pressure on us and putting pressure on me.
“We’ve got to start looking at making some changes right now. What they are I don’t know yet, but as a team and a club, we’re not happy with where we are.â€
The Tigers found themselves 2-0 down after just ten minutes at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday night,
A goal from Blaho Novak on 14 minutes threatened to tip the balance in favour of The Tigers, but Guildford regained their two-goal cushion four minutes later.
Further strikes in the second period handed the visitors a healthy 5-1 advantage, before Joe Miller pulled a goal back at the start of the third session.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished, however, as the Flames scored twice late on to seal victory.
Watkins added: “I’m really disappointed and I said the same thing to the players. To concede 14 goals and score just two, while letting the other teams get at us, was disappointing.
“I thought we had a couple of bad moments at key points tonight. When we had a four on three during the second period, to take a minor penalty kind of hurt us.
“Even at 5-1 today, we had four or five great chances that we didn’t convert and that makes a huge difference.â€
The Tigers EPL have just one game next weekend, away at Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday night. Their next home game is against Bracknell Bees on December 19th.
