“Our goal is to win the league” – that’s the rallying cry from Matt Wainwright, after he became The Dragons’ first signing of the Red Hockey era.The young defenceman arrived from Laidler Conference rivals Widnes Wild this week, as Head Coach Lol Paul builds his first squad in Flintshire. Wainwright will also take up an assistant coaching position at Deeside’s junior outfit, with a brief to prepare the club’s youngsters for life in the senior side. But it is the Laidler Conference title – and ultimately promotion – which is likely to fill much of Wainwright’s time during the upcoming campaign. He said: “It was a very easy decision to come and play in Deeside. I enjoyed my time playing in Widnes, but it is a different quality of supporter here. This is my home rink.“We’ve got some of the most passionate fans in the league. When I was here last time, they really created a big buzz around the rink and I’m looking forward to seeing that again next season.“We’ve been close to winning silverware a few times, but now our target is to win the league.”The 21-year-old, who learned his craft at Chester Road, first broke into the senior side in 2010 – and he’s determined to see that flow of talent continue. He added: “I’ve taken on the Assistant Coach role with Deeside’s juniors, so I want to develop a decent feed of youngsters coming through. Hopefully, they can get some valuable ice time.“The junior club is on the rise and having Red Hockey here will only improve the standard of players coming in.“Ideally, we can have a bigger and better team, at EPL or even Elite one day, and these kids can get a jump on the competition.”Paul Baker, Director of Red Hockey, believes Wainwright’s signing will prove to be a masterstroke for The Dragons. He said: “Matt is a great player, but just as importantly, he is committed to what we’re doing in Deeside. Bringing him back is something of a coup for us.“He will contribute to our success on the ice, but also to the development of youngsters. He knows most of the players here at The Dragons, which will help him settle in.“I can’t wait to see this side skate out for the new season.”
