Utica Devils the Hottest AHL Team

The Utica Devils are on a hot streak. The AHL’s hottest team is doing something we rarely see in the game of hockey.

Since the season began the Devils have been very impressive, currently on a 13 game winning streak, which is the most consecutive wins to start a season. A winning streak of this magnitude in hockey is unheard of.

During this streak the Devils have scored 54 goals while allowing just 24 goals against.

Center Chase de Leo leads in scoring with 2 goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 8 games, defenseman Reilly Walsh leads the defense in scoring with 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 points in 13 games. Defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon leads the team in plus/minus with a +14

The goaltending has also been very good, with the goaltending duties being split between Akira Schmid and Nico Daws. Schmid leads the duo with a 1.65 GAA.

The goaltending duo rank 1 and 2 in save percentage in the league. Schmid is first with an incredible .944 save %, while Daws has been just as good, operating at a .938 save %, good for 2nd.

The special teams should also be recognized as well. The Power play is clicking at a 22.2% clip and the penalty kill has been just as good, operating at  86.4%.

The Devils, AHL club of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, is an impressive 8-0 at home and 5-0 on the road.  They currently sit 9 points ahead of the 2nd place Toronto Marlies in the North division.

Utica Devils coach Kevin Dineen has this team clicking on all cylinders.  There is not a weak spot on this team and they are strong in all 3 zones.

The team is solid all around, from the 1st line down to the 4th, or defensive specialists, line. The defensive unit is also playing well, with all 6 defensemen communicating on the ice and doing their job in their zone.

We have not seen a streak of this magnitude in some time. We also have not seen a team play this well as a team in awhile.

Unless a miracle happens this impressive streak will come to an end at some point. Until that happens we should enjoy this as this may not happen for awhile, if ever.

The Utica Devils should be proud of their play so far. Not too many teams come into a new season with new players and gel this quickly and this well.
