Unlucky 7 For Wild Women at Bracknell
The Widnes Wild women’s team’s lost their “bottom of the table” clash 7-0 away to the Bracknell Firebees on Sunday down in Berkshire.
The Wild team travelled with a shorter bench than in previous games due to a bout of illness in the camp and several of the more experienced players were missing from the line –up – so it was always going to be an uphill struggle against a Firebees side who, like the Widnes team, were also looking for their first points of the season.
Most of the damage was caused by the Firebees’ French international player Marguerite Laffitte who scored 5 of the Bracknell goals and assisted on one other. She also plays for the Queen Bees in the Women’s Elite League and the Bracknell male Under 20 team and she has also won medals at international level for France.
The Wild women actually started the game well, keeping out the Bracknell attack for over 7 minutes before conceding two quick goals within 60 seconds of each other. A third goal just 30 seconds from the start of the second period put the home side further ahead and, with two more goals added before the second break, a home win was already a near certainty. Two further goals in the third period made sure of the result for the Firebees and the Wild women now have time to regroup before their next game.
After the game, assistant coach Leen de Decker said: “It was a hard fought game with many players for Wild missing due to injury and illness, but a quick paced game saw the players improve tremendously yet again. Bracknell had one particularly talented young player (5 goals and 1 assist) and she made the difference. We hope to give them a good game with a full team present when they visit us in Widnes.”
The Wild women are next in action on Sunday 20th January when they host the Nottingham Vipers at Planet Ice Widnes – face off 5.30pmM.
