UK Round Up 6th October

Elite League

The game of the night was at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast as the Panthers visited the Giants. The Panthers in a rich vain of form after a mid week win in Cardiff and Friday’s dominant display over the Coventry Blaze found themselves behind twice but each time managed a quick response. Despite an injury to Jordan Fox the Panthers forced over time but lost out on the second point on penalties.

Two of the nights other matches saw 4 teams needing victories facing eachother. In Edinburgh the Braehead Clan gained a confidence boosting win over the Capitals. In the early running the Clan and the Capitals found themselves the bottom two but goals from McPherson, Farmer and Goldie helped the Clan to relieve some of the pressure on them. Meanwhile in Cardiff the Devils piled on the pressure on Steelers head coach Ryan Finnerty by grinding out a 2 – 1 victory. The Steelers who lost both of their games last weekend had responded by releasing Cory Pecker in midweek but powerplay strikes from Hill and Faulkner gave the Devils the win and a much needed boost following their midweek performance against the Panthers.

The final game of the night was in Hull where the Dundee Stars were the visitors. The Stars had been putting together some good performances and picking up wins against fellow Gardiner Conference sides. Goals from Bagron and Wirll cancelled out Janis Ozolins first period strike and were enough to edge a tight contest in favour of the away team. Sami Ryhanan added to empty netter with 4 seconds left.

Swindon Wildcats produced the performance of the night as they condemned the Guildford Flames to their second defeat in a row. The Wildcats having shut out the Basingstoke Bison in midweek dominated the contest to beat the top two in the league in the same week. The Sheffield Steeldogs made a slow start but beat the Telford Tigers whilst the Peterborough Phantoms lost to the Slough Jets. The final game saw the Milton Keynes Lightning get the better of the Bracknell Bees subjecting the Berkshire outfit to their first defeat in 3 weekends.
