Tribute to Former Giant Staff Pete Collins

It is with great sadness that I am writing about the passing of one of the great people from the original Belfast Giants off-ice team.  Peter Collins, the original PR and Media Manager for the Belfast Giants died suddenly on Sunday while on vacation with his wife in America.  He leaves behind his wife Paula and their two children Phil and Josie.

“Pistol” as the boys on the team always called him, was a huge part of the Giants Organisation from Day One and was the man behind so much of the press coverage throughout Northern Ireland and across the globe during the first couple years of the Giants existence.  He travelled with the team to all away games and was as much of one of the boys as any of the players.  He always had a witty comment or a crack to make at us, he loved the banter with the guys.

I have heard from a number of former players and Giants staff last night about this, and everyone of us have such fond memories of Pete.  He was such a good guy, a genuine hockey-mad person who was instrumental in so many of the big ideas that made the Giants what we were back then and what we are today.

I have stayed in touch with him since he left the Giants and whether it was 6 weeks or 6 months, whenever he called me or I called him, we always had a good laugh.  He was just one of those guys that you loved to talk to and loved to be around.  I remember when I had my testimonial, he was probably the first guy to call me and tell me he was booking his flight over.  This is a very sad time for anyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.  My deepest sympathy and that of my former teammates goes out to his wife and kids.  I can’t fathom how difficult this time is for them, but hopefully they will find some small comfort in knowing how he touched my life and the lives of every person that met him through the Giants.

There will be a minutes silence on Saturday Night prior to face-off in memory of this great man.
