Ice hockey in France is over seen by Hockey France and there are clubs across the country not just in the Alpes. The league structure in France consists of 4 leagues for men and 2 for women with promotion and relegation between the leagues. The highest is the Ligue Magnus and it is considered on a par with the top ice hockey leagues in the UK, Denmark and Italy with its top sides often qualifying european competitions regularly. The Ligue Magnus is also one of the oldest ice hockey competitions in the world having being formed in 1907.
