Tough season opener for double-winning Tigers

The Tigers will open their English Premier League title defence against Sheffield Steeldogs and Swindon Wildcats on September 12th and 13th.

The reigning league and British Challenge Cup winners will travel to Yorkshire on the Saturday, before the opening game at Telford Ice Rink 24 hours later.

September 19th sees The Tigers travel to EPL newcomers Hull Pirates, before facing likely title rivals Basingstoke Bison the next day.

Paul Thomason, General Manager of The Tigers, is looking forward to finally getting the new season underway.

He said: “Last season was incredible for everyone involved with this club, but now we’re back into the thick of it straight away.

“Sheffield are always a tough side to face and even without Andre Payette, they will give us a physical challenge.

“Swindon have signed a very good team and they are expected to be near the top of the league at the end of the year. We had a good series against them last year.

“We have got to be on our game from the very first weekend, especially with those two tough games, and then Hull and Basingstoke just a week later.”

Games between The Tigers, Manchester Phoenix and Bracknell Bees will count towards the Red Hockey Cup, which will add further competition to the season.

A busy festive schedule currently has The Tigers playing Hull at home on Boxing Day (TBC), before travelling to face Manchester Phoenix 24 hours later.

They then face three games in three days, starting with a New Year’s Day trip to face Milton Keynes Lightning.

The final few weeks of the season, meanwhile, will see Telford play potential title deciders against Basingstoke and Milton Keynes Lightning, on March 12th and 13th.

And Swindon will be The Tigers’ final regular season opponents, when they travel to Shropshire on March 20th.

Thomason added: “Every team in the league has improved considerably over the summer, so the games against Basingstoke and MK could be crucial.

“Then the final match against Swindon has all the ingredients of a classic, especially if the title is up for grabs. Basingstoke play Guildford on the same night, so anything could happen.”

Paul Baker, Director of Red Hockey, is looking forward to an even better season, following a busy summer of off-ice activity.

He said: “Getting the fixture list is always a great way of saying the new season is just a few weeks away.

“Our fans are going to see some big changes on match nights, as we look to capitalise on our success and create a better experience all round.

“It has been a very busy summer, but we are now looking forward to an even busier season!”
