Tigers start to build summer union with fans

Telford Tigers kicked off their summer programme in front of hundreds of young Rugby players at the Telford Hornets youth festival on Sunday.

Roary the Tiger was the star of the show at Telford Town Park, as the club began a lengthy programme of promotions throughout the off-season.

The event saw youngsters from across the country gather at Telford Hornets’ Hinkshay Road ground, just yards from the Tigers’ own base in Southwater.

Matt Bowyer, director of Tigers owners Telford Ice Sports, said: “I have been involved with Oswestry Rugby Club for many years, so I saw this event in Telford as great way of promoting the Tigers.

“It is absolutely crucial that we get involved in as many of these events as possible this summer. Connecting with fans, old and new, is central to our strategy.

“I want this club to have the best possible start next season, and play in front of big crowds from the word go. That will give the players a big advantage.”

The annual Telford Hornets tournament included youth teams from Telford, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Nottingham, Harrogate and Bridgnorth.

Mr Bowyer added: “We had a great time showing off all the great things that Telford Tigers are known for. It was lovely to be so well received by every club.

“A lot of youngsters were keen to start our Learn to Play programme. That in turn will bring even more children into the sport, and more fans to our games.

“Jason Silverthorn and Sam Zajac, two of our star players, spent a lot of time talking to the different clubs. They were very popular and had plenty of photos taken.

“I would like to thank Julie and Ian at Telford Hornets RFC for their hospitality. I am looking forward to creating a strategic partnership with them over the coming months.”
