Tigers Learn to Play returns
Telford Tigers will relaunch the club’s popular Learn to Play scheme tomorrow evening – and places are still up for grabs.
A revamp of the ice pad at Telford Ice Rink means students will be some of the first young players to skate out onto the new surface.
Youngsters can learn from GB gold medal-winning coach Tom Watkins at the weekly hour-long sessions, which take a place from 4.30pm on Tuesdays.
Watkins – who is also head coach of EPL champions Telford Tigers – is looking forward to welcoming new players to tomorrow night’s session.
He said: Learn to Play is a hugely popular way for youngsters to start playing ice hockey. Players must have basic skating skills, but we can supply equipment and sticks.
“We’ve already had quite a few enquiries, but there are still places available for keen skaters who want to try ice hockey for the first time.
“Many young people who started out on learn to play have gone on to play for Telford Tigers Juniors in leagues across the country.
“Ice hockey is a great way of keeping fit, but also to meet life-long friends and learn important skills.”
Other coaches include Rick Plant, who won the English Premier League title with Telford Tigers just two months ago.
“An important part of Learn to Play is the fact that students learn from some of the very best British players,” Watkins said.
“Rick is an excellent teacher and has won countless titles around the game. Having that experience on hand is crucial for any new player.
“My ambition is to see a youngster from Learn to play take to the ice as a senior Telford Tigers player. I am confident that will happen in coming years.”
Telford Tigers Learn to Play takes place for an hour on Tuesday evenings, at Telford Ice Rink, from 4.30pm.
The cost of an eight-week course is ￡40, with the first taster session free to newcomers. Players must be under 16.
