This Week 3rd March

This week has been a watershed moment for British ice hockey with two announcements that will change the future of the game in this country.

NIHL is on the Air

Initiative and forward thinking are not words often used for British ice hockey but now it has been announced that some NIHL games will broadcast on its own Internet radio station. Details are still emerging of this fan led project but their will be live games and a continuous stream throughout the week. So far Whitely Bay, Blackburn and Widnes have confirmed live commentary and more could follow when the project is launched this month.

Adams in Steel City

As was widely rumoured Gerard Adams has taken over as Head Coach of the Sheffield Steelers. It was instant success for Adams as he won in Nottingham before taking on former team the Cardiff Devils on Sunday evening. A resounding 6-2 win over his former employer.

Roll With It

Momentum is critical at this time of year and three sides have it in the EIHL. The Belfast Giants points streak keeps extending after winning the title thanks to overtime win in Fife. That is same Fife squad that has lifting themselves to have a shot at the playoffs as thanks to a win over Dundee in midweek and a point against the Giants are only 2 points behind the 8th placed Devils. The Stars are also motoring now as they look to pick up their first EIHL Silverware. A Saturday night win over the Hull Stingrays moved them 2 points clear of the Rays with 5 Conference games to play. Crucially the Rays have only 2 left and Braehead are 5 points behind with 4 games to play. Over the weekend the Stars also picked up a win over the Nottingham Panthers on home ice.

It could be a make or break week for the Cardiff Devils. They have 3 games this week and any points over Nottingham and Belfast on Tuesday and Friday will ramp up the pressure on the Fife Flyers to make it another 4 point weekend. Failure to get any points and the Flyers could be looking down at the Devils. However with the Coventry Blaze just 3 points ahead of the Devils Sunday’s meeting will be very important we just don’t know why yet.

In the EPL Wednesday is crucial day for Silverware. The MK Lightning will be hosting the Basingstoke Bison in the first leg of the EPL Cup final but at the same time the Manchester Phoenix will be in action against the Peterborough Phantoms with the Phoenix looking to move clear at the top of the table.
