This week 27th October
It was looking like it could be a quiet week in the UK. That was until Friday when an NHLer was announced as returning to the EIHL and a well intended press release was taken the wrong way.
Bissonette A Devil Again Breifly
The Cardiff Devils revealed on Friday that former Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonette was rejoining the side but by Sunday he was already signed up by an AHL side with a view to earning his place in the NHL. It was still a major coup for the Devils and for the EIHL that a player has chosen to play in the UK straight from the NHL. It appears that many teams were interested in Bissionette and he may have had 2 other offers from EIHL teams but after icing with the Devils during the lockout Bissionette approached the Cardiff Devils to ask about playing and training with the side to stay in shape.
Away relief for Devils
Friday was a busy day for the Devils whose away white jerseys finally arrived. It is a welcome relief for all in EIHL who will now not need to suffer the bright green quite so often.
Panther Foot in Mouth
The EIHL and UK ice hockey is never far from a foot in mouth moment and lets face it we all love it. Fridays release from the Panthers was one of those moments. It proclaimed that the Giants had lost the last two games at the NIC and that they were lucky to get through their Continental Cup group and that the Panthers were superior because they were playing in the CHL. Perhaps someone should have mentioned that the Giants won the league a month early in February whilst the Panthers failed to make the playoff finals.
Title Winners Head to Head
The Manchester Phoenix and the Solway Sharks went head to head in Dumfries in the Challenge Cup on Saturday night. The winners of the EPL were 11-0 winners over the NIHL North Championships. It was a result that does question the Cup. However in order to improve it does need time and maybe a bit less from the imports.
Fife and Dundee is normally a game with a lot at steak. Saturday was no different but the Jordan Fulton incident as made a great deal of talking points. For once the criticism has not been at the Department of Player Safety but at the referees. The video here clearly shows the referee yards away from the incident yet fails to call an elbow penalty (perhaps due to the tanglement of the players) and then gives Fulton 2 minutes for cross check despite the contact being very high.
EPL Front Runners Have Scares
The 2 front runners in the EPL both had scares as over the weekend. The Basingstoke Bison on Saturday went down to the MK Lightning who recorded their first victory in the new MK Arena. Telford meanwhile beat the Guildford Flames on Saturday but needed overtime to get the win over the Manchester Phoenix who will be hoping the weekends performances will be a sign of more to come.
