This Week 23rd March
This week it all came to a head as the EIHL and EPL seasons came to a close.
Sheffield Steelers Crowned Champions
The Sheffield Steelers took the 2015 EIHL crown in a dramatic 2 games over the weekend. On Friday night Sheffield went to Nottingham and the arch rivals were not for handing the advantage to the Steelers. Panthers went into a 2 goal lead before being pegged back to 2-2. A scramble in front of the Panthers goal lead to Roy poking home the winner with 13 seconds left in OT.
Not for doing it the easy way the Steelers again had to come from behind on Saturday against fellow chasers Cardiff. A Steelers win would be enough for them to take the title but the Devils scored first through Hudson. Dowd then equalised in the second before Jeff Legue, scorned in the summer, netted mid way through the third to win the title.
Panthers claim Erhardt Title
The Nottingham Panthers took the Erhardt title on Saturday night with the Cardiff Devils loosing in Sheffield.
Clan Make CHL Birth
The Braehead Clan secured second place in the EIHL and a spot in the CHL next season with a nailbaiting victory over the Fife Flyers. With Cardiff winning in the BBT the Clan needed to win their game. It was Stefan Meyer’s third period goal that edged for the Clan to send them to CHL in August.
Tigers Make it a Double
The Telford Tigers made it a double of trophies on Thursday night by lifting the British Challenge Cup. The Tigers defeating the Manchester Phoenix to make it 2 trophies from 2 this year and keep the grand slam alive.
Flames extinguished by Ice Problems
The end of the EPL season has been somewhat stinted by the game between the Flames and the Tigers on Saturday being abandoned with the Tigers leading 2-1. A crack in the ice could not be repaired and the decision was made to end the game. With the teams places for the playoffs already set it is unlikely the game will be replayed.
