Table Top Challenge Awaits…

This weekend the 2J Design Sheffield Senators face their toughest challenge to date in the 2012/2013 season, as they face the Top 2 teams in NIHL2 North.

On Saturday the Sens host Solihull Barons, who are keen to make a quick return to NIHL1.  They have shown their intent by signing ex-NHL Defenceman Chris Allen and retaining the services of fan favourite Canadian import Mike Rodger.  The old guard of Phil Lee, Adam Andrews, Rob Eley, Phil Knight and Erik Bakalar will play with the same grit and determination they have shown for many years.  Lui Brindle, Richard Slater and Dale Buckland are stamping their mark on the league and vying to become the next generation of Hobb’s Moat Road, Hall of Famers.  This weekend also marks the return of former Sens goalie Dave ‘Disco’ Roxburgh, who will be back in the more familiar colours of Red and White.

On Sunday the Sens travel to the NIC in Nottingham, a tough place to come away with a result at any age group.  The Lions were relegated via a play-off with Sutton Sting at the end of last term.  The Lions have retained most of their squad and added depth with ex-Nottingham Panther legend Simon Hunt.  Former Solihull Baron Luke Thomas has returned to Nottingham as captain after the departure of Nick Whyatt to the Sheffield Spartans.  Former Sheffield junior Ollie Betteridge has been setting the league alight with his speed and eye for goal.

Both games promise to be barn-burners and the Sens are ready for what will be a physical and mental challenge of the highest order.

Sens Head Coach Andy Ellis added “When the fixtures were released I knew this weekend would be a tough challenge for my guys.  We have started really well and despite having a 5 week break between games we have kept the momentum going.  We need to play a disciplined game and take our chances when they come, without over committing and allowing these teams to play to their strengths.  I’m looking forward to seeing how we can compete against teams who played in NIHL1 last term.  There are 4 points available and we want to take them all, I can’t wait to get going!”
