ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars today kick off their 2016-2017 roster announcements by revealing the return of last season’s top British points scorer, Chris Sykes.

Sheffield native Sykes joined up with the Stars for the 2014-2015 campaign from Sutton Sting, having previously turned out at Elite and English Premier League level for Hull Stingrays and Sheffield Steeldogs respectively. Sykes spent much of last year paired with Callum Davies and Michael Elder, the three forming a consistently dangerous line that delivered more points than any other.

Sykes is now based on Teesside and is loving his time with the Stars. The desire to win trophies remains as strong as ever, as does the willingness to push on and improve:

“I was happy with my performance over last season and the points that I put up. I’ve come behind the import for the two seasons that I’ve been at the Stars, which I’m happy about. I have a target every season so I can push myself and I have another in mind for the new season. I’m always trying to improve certain things here and there, one thing that sticks in my mind is the amount of backhand breakaways I missed! So I’ll work on that.

It’s always nice to win and to win the Northern Cup was a massive high for us and the fans after a bit of a disappointing League season. We did pick up injuries but I don’t want to blame it on that, we know it wasn’t what we expected but we learn from mistakes and move on, this year we can rectify all of those mistakes. I think we need to just iron out a few little things and we will be challenging for the playoffs and hopefully the title. Every season we want to win, of course we do, that’s why we play and turn up every week so that’s what we are aiming for this coming season!

I love it at the Stars. I joined two seasons ago now which isn’t long in hockey terms and the boys are like my brothers, it’s just a big family on and off the ice. We do things together through summer and through the weeks together which is really good. They all welcomed me and I appreciated it (even a couple welcomed me that use to slash my arms off!) and I’m happy here. I’m enjoying my hockey and putting up the best numbers of my career so I’m happy and settled and most of all having fun!”
