Steelers Add Blueline Size

The Sheffield Steelers have signed a former NHL defenseman to give their blue line some size. Coming on board is NHL veteran Keaton Ellerby.

The Steelers signed Ellerby because of the work he does at his end of the ice, his experience and his toughness. Although not a big fighting defenseman he does the dirty work and plays a physical game. Enough to keep the opposition honest. He will not hesitate to stick up for teammates but does not cross the line.

Ellerby was drafter by the NHL Florida panthers 10th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He spent parts of 4 seasons with the panthers before spending time with the Los Angeles kings.  He spent 6 years in the NHL, totaling 27 points.  Aside from playing for Florida and Los Angeles, Ellerby  played for the Winnipeg jets.  Ellerby also spent 4 years in the AHL, totaling 191 games and 63 points.

Ellerby sees the ice extremely well and has a great outlet pass. He’s not flashy, will not quarterback a power play and will not lead the team in points.  He will do just the opposite. He clears rebounds,  is outstanding on the penalty kill, plays a nasty and physical game in his own zone and will make sure the oppositions top scorers don’t get room to operate. Ellerby is also a great shot blocker and that skill will be useful especially in the penalty kill.

At 6-foot-5 and 216 pounds he also brings size to the steeler defensive core.  He uses that size  to cut down the areas the opposition has and also uses that size to punish them into the boards.

This will be the first year Ellerby has played in the EIHL but he is sure to make his name known. At 32 years old he isn’t the young prospect anymore. Instead he uses that experience to play a simpler, more defined game that helps out the forwards and his netminder. Ellerby will be an asset to the team, mainly In the locker room and in the defensive zone.

Keaton Ellerby comes with experience and is an imposing figure  on the blue line. Don’t expect a lot offensively, as that is not why he was singed.  Expect him to play solid minutes and contribute defensively. At 32 he is older but still has very sound play left in him. He’s only signed for this year but could still play a few more years. Welcome to the Sheffield Steelers Keaton Ellerby.
