Stars Need to Look for Improvements in Playoff Push

Dundee Starts Coach Omar Pacha

The Dundee Stars have struggled early and have dug themselves a bit of a hole.  The question is do they have time to turn things around or is the hole too deep?

Questions around the Stars are wondering why the team is off to such a slow start. Looking at the numbers it’s quite clear the goaltending isn’t up to par.

Dundee has played 17 games so far and have a 6-10 record to show for it. During that time they have scored 42 goals which isn’t horrible but have surrendered 54 goals, which is not good.

Adam Morrison has been the starter, playing all 17 games, compiling a 6-11 record with a 3.24 GAA and a decent save % of .914. His backup, 6-foot-6 and 183 pound Brython Preece, has appeared in one game with a GAA of 10.00, saving only 1 of 2 shots in 6 minutes.

The offense is a different story. While not being the highest scoring team in the EIHL the team is blazing fast and creates chances. Left winger Charlie Combs leads the team with 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points, which is 11th in the league in 17 games. Teammate Gabriel Desjardins is second in team scoring, posting 4 goals and 12 assists for 16 points in 17 games.

The only person who knows how to change this around is Omar Pacha, who is both the head coach and general manager. He could rearrange the lines or he could make some trades to shake things up.

The Stars need one or the other, or perhaps both. The changes need to be on the defensive end, with defense and goaltending both struggling to put it together.

Newcomer left winger Cody Drover has provided a little at both ends of the ice. Offensively he has contributed 3 goals and 1 assists for 4 points in 6 games, while using his speed on the defensive end to break up chances.

The Dundee Stars last made the playoffs in the 2016-17 season. The hill this season may be too much for the promising Stars to climb.

The Stars need more scoring from the defense, and not just goal scoring but to be offensively creative when in the offensive zone. The goaltending also needs improving, whether it be a trade or a signing.

The Stars could also use scoring some timely goals. Situations this year have resulted in Dundee losing close games because they can’t get those timely goals in critical situations.

When all is said and done, the Stars could still make the playoffs and have a successful season. However, with the roster as it currently is, could use improvements for this to turn around.
