Spartans lose out to hawks

A spirited performance from Spartans in what was a good game of hockey against the Hawks in Blackburn but it was not enough to get the better of their opponents after large parts of the game were pretty even but Hawks at times gained the upper hand by making the most of their chances & punishing some silly mistakes & penalties to run out deserved winners in the end against a short benched Spartans.

A close first period ended 3-2 to Hawks after Spartans had taken the lead through Alex Harding, only to find themselves pegged back after Jared Owen & Ollie Lomax had scored for Hawks. Spartans grabbed an equaliser through Dougie Jordan only for Matt Viney to put the Hawks back in front 3-2 a couple of minutes.

Hawks made the most of their plays in the second period whilst Spartans collected penalties from which they managed to score two further goals, Petr Jagr & Miles Dacres the scorers however a battling Spartans team scored a goal sandwiched between those goals, scored by Ollie Barron. As the period settled Blackburn eventually started to find their form but were thwarted by a determined Spartans defence which saw the period finish Hawks 5-3 with the game up for grabs but with Hawks firmly in the driving seat.

Hawks had the better of things from the off in the final period but Spartans deserve credit for pushing Blackburn all the way in what was still a good game of hockey but Hawks dominance saw them increase their lead through Sam Dunford & Petr Jagr to make it 7-3 to Hawks & in fairness it could have been worse for Spartans but despite this they continued to battle & were rewarded with a late consolation goal tucked away by Dan Taylor. With no further scoring, the game ended Blackburn 7 Hawks 4. A decent performance to be happy with for a short benched Spartans team who were just not quite good enough on the day against a very good Blackburn team who were worthy winners in the end!
