Signing News: Ben Brown & Matt Watts
Matt Watts joins Wild after previously playing at recreation level, he spent a season at Manchester Phoenix in 2007 and has done enough in previous weeks to convince Head Coach Mark Gillingham and Manager Mick Caunce to put pen to paper on a chance to come back into the leagues.
Matt Watts is another forward, but from what we have seen at training he will be an asset to the near complete Wild squad. Having played a little in the NIHL Matt is relishing the prospect of stepping up from Rec hockey. Fast skating, good hands and an awesome shot secured his place on the team.
21-year-old Ben Brown has moved to Widnes from Manchester Minotaurs and has a strong background of Manchester-based Ice Hockey. He played for Phoenix juniors at U16, U18 and U19 level. After spending 2 seasons in Switzerland playing for EHC Dübendorf and ZSC Lions, Ben’s senior appearances in NIHL were for Manchester Metros and he continued on with the re-branded Manchester Minotaurs making 4 appearances this season before moving to Wild.
The lads have been great in welcoming me into the team, I’ve been able to settle in at training really quickly and there’s a genuine buzz in the room. Having played at Widnes during the pre-season, there also seems to be a real buzz from the fans as well, so hopefully that can give us a boost for home games later in the season!
I’m currently studying at LJMU and living in Liverpool, so the move to Widnes really appealed to me. After training with the team for the last few weeks, I really feel I can fit into Mark’s vision of how the team should play and decided to sign.
Hopefully i’ll be able to contribute offensively and also to provide some solid defence for the team this year. I’ve been keeping track of the team’s results so far and there doesn’t seem to be any lack of scoring ability for the lads. as a strong carrier and passer of the puck, I think i’ll be able to complement them well!
Brown and Watts are both available and on the team sheet for Wilds visit to Sheffield tomorrow evening at iceSheffield!
