SIGNING: Double winning Kim joins Sharks to Finnish the D lineup

Building Craftsmen Dumfries-sponsored Solway Sharks are pleased to announce the signing of Finnish defenceman Kim Miettinen for the 16/17 NIHL season.

Miettinen was a League and Playoff winner with Blackburn Hawks last season, and now the 22-year-old moves up the M6 to Dumfries for the new campaign.

The Tuusula native scored 42 points (10+32) in 37 league and cup games with the Hawks last season but was not retained by new coach Matt Darlow as the Blackburn side went with two non EIHA trained forwards this season.

Solway coach Martin Grubb was conscious that his side needed to be more solid defensively, so the addition of Miettinen alongside Senko, Hutchinson, Kerr and Wallace gives a formidable backline for the Sharks.

Grubb said on the signing: “I am very pleased to be able to add Kim to our lineup and complete what I think is an extremely solid defensive unit. I have been talking to Kim for a little while and I was impressed with what he wanted to achieve this season and how he talks about the game.

“On the ice I like his composure both on and off the puck and I think he competes well. He can see the ice very well and makes a good pass and in his own zone he is physical and from my research I know he is a good team mate and will fit in very well to our dressing room.

“When I researched our goals conceded last year we lost 64% of our goals with four forwards on the ice due to the import rule and us having one import forward and one defence.  I knew I wanted two guys in the same position and I really like how our D core looks.

“I always think if you take care of defence then offence takes care of itself and I know we have the firepower to score goals from all over our roster and I am happy with where we are and ready to get started now.”

Kim Miettinen will wear the #47 jersey for Solway Sharks as the side build towards opening night in September.
