SIGNING: Come in #51 – calling the Captain back for new season

Solway Sharks’ all time appearance leader will add to his record next season, the club are pleased to announce today.

Struan Tonnar will wear not only his #51 jersey but once again have the captain’s C as the Building Craftsmen Dumfries-sponsored side begin their 19th season in September.

Tonnar, 26, is a product of the Dumfries system and has laced them up 224 times to be comfortably the franchise leader. His 165 goals are second only to Bob Chalmers in the scoring charts too.

Last season’s 22 goals and 35 points in all competitions were below par by his own high standards, although his scoring touch did return later in the season as the Sharks went on a great post-Christmas run to make the playoff finals.

Coach Martin Grubb is looking for his captain to return to the form of previous years.

“Struan had a disappointing season last year but that is because he sets himself high standards and targets and sometimes he takes too much on.

“This season we will be looking to get the impact player back that we have seen in previous years. He has all the attributes with speed, skill, size and he can score big goals and he has worked extremely hard over the summer to ensure he is ready for the new season.

“We had a good chat recently about how we see the season ahead and I am excited to be working with Struan again as I know we will get a player who is a winner and will lead his team every night and he will play wherever I ask him but this year I know we will see the offensive impact he can have and that can only be a good thing for this team.”

Look out for more player announcements over the coming weekend.
