Shields Excited For Thornton Return

Stena Line Belfast Giants forward Colin Shields was recently announced as returning for his seventh season in Northern Ireland. Now the organisation’s all-time leading points scorer, Shields has accomplished a lot with the Giants – winning every major trophy in UK ice-hockey with Belfast and then some. Shields collected his fourth winners medal with the team in February 2013 when the Giants clinched the Elite League championship with a record breaking ten games remaining, his second national championship as a Giant and the Team GB international is already looking forward to the new season under new coach Steve Thornton,

“I’m really excited – I think we had a really good season as a team, despite falling short of a few goals towards the end of the season. With the guys coming back and the team Todd and Steve are putting together, everyone is excited and putting the work in this summer to have another good year.”

The ‘new’ coach is a familiar face to the Giants organisation, especially to Shields who won three trophies in Thornton’s two previous seasons in the role between 2008-2010,

“Steve is a great coach, we won 3 trophies in 2 seasons including that big playoff win that everyone remembers. He’s a great coach to play for and allows a lot of creativity and we’re excited to have him back.”

With such a decorated career to date, Shields could be excused for resting on his laurels, however the Scot is more determined than ever to bring more silverware to Belfast starting in the 2014/15 season, the Giants 15th season in existence,

“Theres lots (to play for) – every year you try to build on previous seasons. It’s a matter of setting team goals and our goal will be to win all available trophies and give ourselves a good opportunity to get there. People always remember the winning teams and the winning seasons and all the guys will want to add to their list of accomplishments.”
