Sharks win ensures cup triumph
The BCD Solway Sharks beat a disappointing Whitley Warriors side by six goals to three at the Shark Tank on Saturday night to ensure that they will lift the Northern Cup once more unless the do something to warrant a points deduction.
Going into the game the Warriors were the only team in the competition who could better the Sharks points total and that was only if they were to win all their remaining games but for some reason they seemed somewhat sluggish and disinterested. In a lacklustre opening period the Sharks were generally on top throughout but could only muster a single goal when Stevie Moore and Marc Fowley worked the puck back to right point for Stuart Andrews (11:32) to fire home a lows slapshot.
Into the second session and Daniel Abercrombie (23:40 PP) doubled the Sharks advantage on a powerplay after good work from Kim Mietinnen and Marc Fowley but the Warriors regrouped and responded when Jordan Barnes (32:15). The period came to farantic close with three goals in the final two and a half minutes beginning with Jordan Buesa’s (37:31) neat finish from a Kim Mietinnen pass. Ben Richards (39:21) once more gave the visitors hope with a deft finish in front of goal but Struan Tonnar (39:55) quickly restored Solway’s two goal advantage after good work from Joe Coulter and Jordan Buesa.
The final period began fairly low key but Struan Tonnar (48:15) got the fans on their feet once more when he converted neatly from Buesa and Mietinnen. With seven minutes remaining Marc Fowley (52:56 PP) produced a delightful redirection from the low slot to ensure that Jordan Buesa’s powerplay shot evaded the grasp of ex-Sharks netminder Jordan Boyle to put the home side over the line with a six-two lead. From this point the game got rather scrappy with Whitley more interested in fighting than scoring although Ben Richards (59:36 PP) did notch his second of the night with a late consolation powerplay goal.
