Sharks Too Strong For Warriors

The BCD Solway Sharks were on the road on Sunday evening when they visited the Whitley Warriors on Northern Cup duty and returned a happy side thanks to a six-one victory.

On their third powerplay of the match the Sharks took the lead when Daniel Abercrombie (08:05PP) found the net after patient build-up play from Connor Henderson and James Hutchinson. With the Warriors on the back foot Solway continued to press and a second goal came when Duncan Speirs (16:20) calmly netted Marc Fowley’s pass and that was to be the only further scoring action before the first break.

After the interval the home side pressed for the break that would let them back into the game but found Calum Hepburn in fine form between the pipes for the Sharks. Whitley finally gave their supporters something to shout about when Callum Watson (35:37) shot home from Liam Smedley’s pass. The joy, however, was to be short-lived as Duncan Speirs (38:47) quickly netted his second of the game after being set up by Kim Miettinen and Darren Stattersfield.

After blunting the Warriors attempted comeback at the start of the final session Solway took control of the match when Scott Henderson (52:04) was on hand to make the score four-one with assists on the goal going to Darren Stattersfield and Juraj Senko. This was the spark that sent the home side into a meltdown with Andre Payette given a match penalty for fighting (although no Sharks were takers on this occasion) and ex-Shark Shaun Kippen received a ten plus game plus match penalty at the same time. The referee Mr Wardell was certainly kept busy on the night as he awarded a total of ninety-eight minutes in penalties to the Warriors and none against the Sharks.

With the game over as a spectacle Solway ran in two further powerplay goals before the final buzzer both scored by the hard working Marc Fowley (56:06PP & 56:37PP) assists on the goals went to Kieran Hair and Darren Stattersfield for goal number five and to Duncan Speirs and Kim Miettinen on the final counter.

The Solway Sharks Man of the Match Award went to Marc Fowley.
