Sens…Lion Tamers?

This Saturday the 2J Design Sheffield Senators play host to current league leaders the Nottingham Lions.

The Sens are looking to avenge last weeks 7-5 defeat at the hands of the Nottinghamshire side.  Sens Head Coach Andy Ellis added “Last weekend was a great advert for NIHL2 North, some awesome hockey was played by the Sens on both days.  We battled hard for 120 minutes against two teams who were in the top division last season, to come away with 2 points from 4 was a good result.”

Last Saturday the Sens opened their home campaign with a solid performance and a 4-1 victory over an old nemesis, the Solihull Barons.  It was the Sens first victory over the Barons, coming at the fifth attempt.  Ellis commented “Solihull are a tough team, they play hard every night and have some excellent players.  They didn’t have any luck on the night and we went at it hard for the full 60, in the end I think we were deserved winners.”

On the Sunday, the Sens were back in action against the table topping Nottingham Lions.  The game was definitely one of two halves.  The Sens had the better of the first 30 mins building up a 2-5 lead.  However, the Lions pulled a goal back before the end of the 2nd period and then added four more unanswered in the 3rd.  The Sen played a physical weekend and unfortunatelty suffered injuries to franchise scoring leader Tom Humphries and defenceman Simon Manning, both will be sidelined for several weeks.  As a result, coach Andy Ellis has had to make some changes to the roster, “With injuries sustained against the Lions last week, I’ve made some changes to the line up, we will have Luke Smith and SIHA prospect Joel Aheran in the side this weekend.  Both guys trained with us on Tuesday night and impressed me straightaway, they played with us last season and I’m looking forward to seeing how they go on Saturday.”
