Season (Ticket) To Be Jolly? How Yours Adds Up

It is Christmas and a time for giving and receiving. Whilst you are opening your presents though this festive time have you considered what your season ticket is giving you apart from a huge credit card bill? Also is your team making the most out of the money you pay?

We conducted some research into the season tickets for the EIHL and EPL and came up with some different tables. It is of course hard to put a stone cold figure on whether your season ticket is worth the money. There are many many facts that cannot be quantified beyond the monetary value that determine its worth.

As there are many different deals and offers we used the price (or average price where more than 1 bracket) of an undiscounted season ticket.

As expected the successful teams in the league campaign are near the top. Guildford with their low price and high finish come out with a very low score representing a successful return for your money.

What can you say? The Steeldogs racked up nearly 500 minutes more than any other EPL side last season and that gives them a low score. What is surprising is that at the most expensive cost per penalty minute is a mixture of high and low finishing teams with EPL Champions Manchester 3rd from bottom and Elite League wooden spooners Edinburgh second last above Peterborough.

  1. Points this season

With the season about half way it is not really fair to compare points a team has so far as teams have not played an even number of games. However as a season ticket holder you will have poured your heart into a side and hope that every season your team improves and if your side has 1 bad year it doesn’t mean the next year will not be different.

2015 value worked out on Season ticket divided by games in league season multiplied by games played so far divided by points as of 22/12/12. EPL 48 game season compared to 54 games in 2014. All league games only.

The biggest moves in the list are sides doing markedly better this season. Telford raise up to second on the list and with time left in the season could dethrone Guildford. Edinburgh too moves up the list whilst Coventry plummet given their poor form this season.

It is interesting to look at these figures and there are some conclusions that can be drawn. Sides in the same league are generally in the same area as each other on pricing for season tickets. Nottingham Panthers price is slightly skewed as they have a premium ticket offering higher than the standard but their average is still inline with other EIHL clubs. Cardiff and Guildford clearly stand out. The Devils are the only side to break the £400 marker and their adult price is £55 more expensive than the next EIHL side. The Flames on the other hand are the only side under £200 and by far the cheapest.

The EPL also sees the biggest difference in top and bottom pricing with Manchester’s £156.50 more expensive than Guildford and Manchester are one of the highest attending sides in the league.

If I were to choose a winner from the stats here it would be the Guildford Flames. Their low price and high performance means they consistently ranked higher (lower cost) than other teams both in the EPL and EIHL. Of course though unless you come from Guildford or spent any amount time or have a connection with the town it is unlikely you are going to support them just because of their season ticket pricing. Support goes deeper than that but clubs should perhaps look at their pricing structures and ask are they getting the most of it. After all a lower ticket price and higher attendance could result in a higher return for the club and a happier fan base.

Hull, Basingstoke, Swindon and Braehead were asked for their prices but I have not had a response. I will update this article should be receive them.
