Sandrock Back With The Giants For 2014/15

The Belfast Giants are pleased to announce the re-signing of last season’s top scoring defenceman Robby Sandrock.

Sandrock returns to Belfast for this third consecutive season, his fourth in total with the Giants, coming off the back of a successful 2013/14 season for both the team and the player.

Sandrock helped the Giants to the Elite League Championship last season recording 51 points including 38 assists, a leading tally amongst defencemen. The 36 year-old native of Williams Lake, BC was named on both the Elite League First All-Star Team and the UK Ice Hockey Journalist’s First All-Star Team.

Having played with Robby during the 2002/03 season, Giants Head Coach Steve Thornton knows what he can bring to the team.

“Not only is Robby one of the best defencemen in the league, he is a proven winner. He competes hard, makes great decisions and he can change a game with his shot.

He draws so much attention on the powerplay that he can open up time and space for his line mates. He was a crucial piece to the success that the Giants have had in the past and I expect him to help lead us to more championships in the future.”

With Sandrock confirmed, only one spot on defence remains and Thornton will be patient as he builds his team for next season.

“I am not going to rush into anything, there are plenty of good players contacting us about coming to Belfast, so right now we are in a good position. We are returning the core of a championship winning team and we are going to wait to find the right guys that can fit into our plans to win more trophies this season.”

Thornton, who is currently in Canada tying up loose ends before moving over to Belfast is expected to be in Northern Ireland by mid-June.
