Sam sees winning spine for Tigers

Defenceman Sam Zajac insists Telford Tigers have the core of a team that will challenge for the English Premier League title next season.

Zajac was a standout performer for Telford last term, culminating in him winning four awards at this month’s presentation evening.

The 26-year-old will remain in Shropshire after signing a two-year deal last year, and believes coach Tom Watkins has the spine of a powerful side.

He said: “I think we’ve got a really strong team here, although obviously it will need a few tweaks. A few guys may come and go, but Tom has a core of good players.

“If we can build around that core and add the right pieces, then I expect the team can get back to challenging like we did last year. We are really excited and I don‘t think a huge overhaul is needed.”

Watkins, currently in Croatia with Great Britain at the world championships, is yet to release his full retained list for the new campaign.

Telford finished fourth in the league last season, before losing to Milton Keynes in the play-off quarter-finals.

Zajac added: “I think if we make small gains in certain areas, then that will make a big difference.

“As a team, we all pulled together during the season. There were some trying circumstances, with injuries and maybe not performing as we would have liked sometimes.”
