Read All About It: Callum’s A Star!
ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars have added youth and strength to their roster with the recruitment of Callum Read, an imposing defenseman who patrolled the Stars Under-20s blue line last season.
20-year-old Read, a product of the Whitley junior system, joined up with the Stars to take his place in the inaugural U20s League. Read has represented Great Britain at Under-18 level and proved an excellent acquisition as he helped the Stars to the North League title and the National Finals. Anyone who watched an U20 game last season remarked on Read’s smooth skating style, and a fine season was topped when he won the Best Defensive Player award for the U20s at Presentation Night.
Read is looking forward to stepping up for his first season of senior hockey:
“Since I arrived everybody has been friendly and welcoming at the club, I am looking forward to joining up with the Senior Stars.
Playing with the Under-20s helped get me back into playing the sport again after a year out and I was happy with my performances for the most part of the season. Some games I feel I could have done better but I blame my fitness for that. My target leading up to this season would be to get back to the same level of fitness that I was at before I quit playing. Playing in a league now with men means I’m going to have to be more physical with my game and improve dramatically with my overall fitness.Â
I think it’s every players ambition to win the League next season. I didn’t see a lot of the senior Stars last year but from a spectators point of view, I’d say perhaps we need a stronger defence. It’s a challenge I’m ready for!”
We welcome Callum on board as our first ‘new’ Star of the summer and we hope he will make his debut on Stars TV very soon. The player news will come thick and fast between now and the end of July – the next announcement will be over the weekend.
