Raiders beaten by Raiders
London Raiders ended up well beaten by their namesakes in the National League cup as tempers boiled over at the Ryde Ice Arena last night.
The visitors lost defenceman John Connolly to a 2+10 checking from behind penalty in the opening minutes, while also picking up a bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
And they were made to pay as Ryan Webb opened the scoring on the powerplay to put the home side ahead.
The scoreline remained unchanged until the final minute of the opening period, though, when Marek Nahlik netted his fifth goal of the season to get the visitors back on level terms.
Wightlink lost Brendan Baird to a 2+10 checking from behind penalty early in the second period, but killed off the minor and then regained the lead through Webb’s second goal of the night.
Daniel Rose made it 3-1 in the 29th minute, but Sam Roberts replied for the visitors soon after.
Wightlink went 4-2 up through George Norcliffe, before the gloves came off and played clashed across the ice, with both sides sent to their lockerrooms with 5:49 still left in the period to cool off.
The home side had Corey Watkins and Ben Paynter ejected with match penalties, while London Raiders lost the services of Matt France and goalie Michael Gray to game misconducts, as well as Jacob Ranson to a 2+10 penalty for checking from behind.
That meant 16-year-old Harry Buckingham had to go between the pipes for the visitors in place of Gray and the youngster had a baptism of fire, with Webb completing his hat-trick to make it 5-2 in the 47th minute.
Captain Tom Davis replied with a powerplay goal for the visitors, but Webb grabbed his fourth a minute later and Alex Sampford and Jordan Gregory got in on the act, before the hosts replaced starting goalie Matt Colclough with Nathan Gregory.
Wightlink completed their tally with just over two minutes as Sampford claimed his second goal to send London Raiders back to Lee Valley, hoping for better against Bracknell in their league meeting on Sunday evening (5.30pm).
Hornets suffered a third successive league loss as they went down 3-1 at home to Solent last night.
Scorers, Wight: Webb 4 Sampford 2 Rose 1 Norcliffe 1 Gregory 1.
London: Nahlik 1 Roberts 1 Smith 1.
