Phantoms Retire Shirt 39
The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms added their first number to the Peterborough Wall of Legends on Saturday evening when Maris Ziedins’ number 39 was added to the list of Peterborough retired shirt numbers.
Maris is the first Phantoms only player to receive this honour, with the previous players having played either for the Pirates or the Pirates and Phantoms.
Very few players, let alone import players, have had the impact that Maris has on the game in Peterborough and upon arriving at the club midway through the 2007-08 season he quickly became a fans favourite.
Speaking on Saturday evening, Head Coach, Jon Kynaston said of Maris ‘Z has been a wonderful ambassador to our club since the day he joined. He is a pure professional who gains respect from teammates and opponents alike. He has made a big contribution to our organisation and deserved a fitting send off’
Andy Halfhide, a member of the Phantoms Management Team, backed up those comments and added ‘Maris is the consumate professional and the best role model there could be for junior players in the sport. He has played at the very highest level achieving the heights of being an olympian – something most of us could only dream of – yet he remains one of the nicest most humble men it has been my privilege to work with.
‘He deserves every accolade and i wish him and Inga every success in all their future endeavours.’
