Peterborough Phantoms 6 – 0 Bracknell Bees
After a heavy defeat to the Guildford Flames the night before the Bees headed up to Peterborough to face the Phantoms on Sunday evening looking to put the previous nights result behind them, however it wasn’t to be.
Again missing James Galazzi and also without Kamil Tvrdek the Bees were already short on bodies.  Tom Murdy and Alex Mettam were given the starts between the pipes.  Face off was delay slightly by a broken section of plexi but things got underway eventually.
The game started feisty with both teams creating chances and finishing their hits.  It was however the Phantoms who with two goals in just over a minute were first to take their opportunities.  Luke Ferrara scored the first goal of the evening after picking up and finishing a rebound from a Marcel Petran shot with 6.32 gone.  Just over a minute later with Lukas Smital sitting out a hooking minor the Phantoms doubled their early lead with Erik Piatak finishing off after a pass from Jaroslav Cesky.
The Bees stepped up their physicality in an effort to get back into the game but a Marcel Petra shot from distance evaded Alex Mettam and the Bees found themselves three goals down with just over ten minutes gone in the game and a long road back to get back into the game.  The first period ended with the sides exchanging powerplays but all were killed off early in the second period.  Chris Wiggins having started the game also didn’t finish the first period going off injured.
The Bees came out all fired up at the start of the second period looking for a way back into the game and dominated both possession and opportunities for the first ten minutes of the period but couldn’t find a way past Murdy in the Phantoms net.  Peterborough did their best to hang on including killing off a Bees powerplay.  When the Bees handed the Phantoms a powerplay chance of their own with a slashing minor however the Phantoms somewhat luckily converted with a Jaroslav Cesky blue line shot that found its way past Alex Mettam, completely against the run of play at the time.  With the period running down a freak ricochet of the puck ended up randomly in the back of the Bees net with less than a minute to go, the goal was finally credited to Tom Soar.
Into the third period and trailing by five, just like the night before, the Bees again dominated the start of the third period.  Lukas Smital rattled a shot off the post, Ollie Bronniman missed a clear open net chance and the Bees created more chances too but again Murdy stood firm.  Things looked brighter and the Bees picked up a powerplay and looked to convert – unfortunately a shorthanded breakaway from Marcel Petran and Jaroslav Cesky was finished by Cesky and the Bees were six down with just over ten minutes left in the game.  The finally ten minutes were rough and tough with the teams exchanging penalties and chances right up until the final whistle.
The scoreline somewhat flatted the Phantoms and the Bees certainly deserved something for their efforts but Murdy kept his clean sheet and picked up the man of the match award for the home team with the Bees award going to Bees forward Matt Foord.
