Parry joins Budzy at Tigers NIHL

Telford Tigers NIHL will boast two title-winning coaches next season, after Jason Parry agreed terms to become assistant coach at the Moralee Conference outfit.

Parry, who guided Telford Titans to the NIHL 2 championship in 2008, will join new head coach Daniel MacKriel, who won the NIHL North title with Blackburn last season,

The former Tigers EPL player was bench coach of the Telford NIHL side last season, when they finished sixth in their first season at the higher level.

Mike Washburn, General Manager of Telford Tigers NIHL, said: “I’m really chuffed that Jason will be returning. In truth, the position was down to Budzy as head coach to make the choice, and it didn’t take very long for him to select Jason.

“The fact that this coaching team is home grown to Telford adds a dimension that is very important in the pedigree that we’re building.

“These first appointments were critical to the foundations of what we are trying to achieve and the potential is huge. I’m looking to Jason to help me with some of the wider aspects of running the team.”

Parry, who also helped to guide Telford to promotion from the Laidler Conference in 2014, said: “I’m really looking forward to the season and working with Budzie. When speaking with Mike over the summer, we both felt it was an absolute no brainer to get him on board.

“Me and Budzie have known each other a long time, he is more of a brother than a friend and we will have the same kind of relationship when coaching.

“Originally I was brought in to be assistant coach to Scott, then Tom last season, although this has worked and we have progressed this team over the last two years.

“It’s now time to have a full time head coach and I will return to being an assistant coach, allowing me more time to work with the younger players in the squad and helping Mike out with the running of the team.

“I know the fresh impetus and enthusiasm that Budz will bring to the dressing room will no doubt push us on to the playoffs, which we let slip last season.

“Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been looking at our squad and have started to make some tweaks, here and there, that will make NIHL nights in Telford an extremely entertaining watch.”

MacKriel, who returns to Shropshire after a lengthy spell in Blackburn, is looking forward to working with Telford stalwart Parry.

He said: “I’m really pleased and excited to have Jason as an assistant coach next season. He brings a wealth of experience to the table and has a great appetite for this club to achieve more.

“Jason did well last year being at the forefront of the team and turned out some impressive performances. I’ve known Jason for a long time and we have a great relationship, so he is someone I trust and respect.

“If you told us that we would be working together in this capacity ten years ago, we would have laughed! It’s great to have someone like him on board, for what’s hoping will be an exciting season.”

Time is now counting down towards the start of the new season and any players that are interested in joining Telford should email as soon as possible.
