Nottingham Panthers 4 Braehead Clan 2
Braehead Clan ended the weekend with a second defeat, but made a full strength Nottingham Panthers work hard for it in a 4-2 loss.
Corey Neilson’s men were looking for back-to-back victories after Saturday’s overtime win over German outfit Krefeld Pinguine.
For Clan, it was another game where coach John Tripp tried out different systems as the players looked to boost their fitness going into the new season.
They tested Panthers goalie Michael Garnett when Adam Brace and Craig Peacock had chances in the early part of the game.
Although goalless after the first 20 minutes, Clan had their fair share of chances, while netminder Ryan Nie was kept on his toes too.
Duties between the pipes were handed over again to Gary Russell, like in Cardiff on Saturday night and with a minute and a half of the second to go, Braehead took the lead.
Craig Peacock buried a rebounded chance after the puck came off the boards from a slapshot that had initially gone wide.
Panthers levelled up before the second break as Brett Perlini combined with Mark Derlago, with Perlini making the finish.
Robert Farmer caught Braehead out with a breakaway goal early in the third to give the home side the lead.
Then Eric Lindhagen opened a two-goal cushion inside the last four minutes as Braehead’s resolve started to falter.
Derlago made it 4-1 as the flurry of goals in the final session continued and it was Clan that had the final word in the scoring.
Peacock was the man as he picked up his second, redirecting an effort past Panthers goalie Sam Gospel and it ended the game on a high note despite the final outcome.
