LAST GASP PENALTY EARNS STARS A SHARE OF THE SPOILS
London Raiders 6 – 6 Oxford City Stars
On Saturday Oxford City Stars travelled to the Lee Valley Ice Centre to play London Raiders, and with the Stars squad decimated by injury and unavailability they fought hard and came away with a share of the spoils. This was Raiders first game of the season. Stars opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Alan Green following good work by Ondrej Pekarik and Mike Whillock, whilst Raiders Jake Pitchley sat a penalty. A second penalty on the home team, and on the same player Pitchley, resulted in Stars second goal with Jake Florey finding the net. Raiders replied and whilst Logan Prince sat a penalty for netminder Shannon Long, Pitchley fired home.
The second period saw the home team come out with renewed determination and they were quickly back on level terms when Marek Nahlik scored, with the assist going to former Stars player James Pentecost. Raiders then took the lead through Kamil Kinkor and further extended this when Bailey Chittock found the net to make it 4-2. A response was required for the visitors and it soon came. Firstly Pekarik scored, and then Joe Edwards tied the game at 4-4 just before the end of the period.
The third period was very similar to the second as firstly London pulled 2 goals clear again with goals from Pitchley, with a shorthanded goal and then Nahlik with a powerplay goal. Stars reply came in the form of a gaol from the recalled Boris Ruzicka to make it 6-5, and then minutes from the end the Stars earned a penalty shot when the London netminder was adjudged to have intentionally knocked the net off, and the impressive Pekarik converted. Final score 6-6.
