Kelman Moves On To Pastures New
Longtime General Manager Todd Kelman is moving on from the Belfast Giants to pursue an opportunity of ownership with the Cardiff Devils franchise that he couldn’t refuse.
The announcement will come as a shock to Giants fans and players, but the organisation has been reviewing hockey operations and the appointment of Steve Thornton has been central to the development of the hockey strategy for the Odyssey.
Odyssey Trust CEO Robert Fitzpatrick explained:
“The appointment of Steve Thornton was part of the development planning for the Giants.
“Todd has kept me informed that he was exploring other options in relation to his future plans and whilst this has come a surprise, I am absolutely delighted that he is fulfilling his dream to be a part of owning a franchise.
“We are proud of what Todd has done as General Manager and as a player and he will always be remembered fondly on and off the ice, we wish him well.â€
As far as the future of the Giants, Fitzpatrick commented that it is business as usual in the Odyssey.
“Todd has been with the Giants since day one and he will be missed, but this team is defending a league title and we have a great core of guys back with the man we identified to take over in charge of the Giants.â€
Steve Thornton is excited about the challenge and looking forward to the upcoming season.
“As I said when my position was announced, there are very few opportunities I would have moved my family back to, and although I was looking forward to renewing my working relationship with Todd, it was clearly explained to me that I was in charge of all hockey affairs and I have a vision for the delivery of that challenge.
“I am delighted to be inheriting a group of people including players, staff and volunteers with a great work ethic and a passion for this team who will be key to delivering on the plans we have going forward.
“I am excited for Todd and wish him well, but my focus now will be on building on the success of the Giants to date, putting together another winning team and giving the people of Northern Ireland the best game night experience that we can for our fans.
“I am looking forward to meeting with our sponsors, volunteers and our fans over the next few weeks to share my vision and passion for the Giants this season.â€
