Joe’s chasing Tigers’ title bid

Joe Miller is targeting a lengthy run of victories to spark The Tigers’ EPL title defence – and he believes a challenge for the grand slam is still on track.

Miller scored his second hat-trick of the season during Saturday’s 6-4 win over Sheffield Steeldogs, before playing a key role in attack against Swindon on Sunday.

That game against the Wildcats ultimately ended in a 4-2 defeat, but Miller – who also struck against Manchester in pre-season – is expecting more as the team continues to gel.

He said: “We outshot Swindon quite well on Sunday, but it was a mixture of running into a hot netminder and also not creating enough quality opportunities to score.

“We had lots of shots, but they kept us outside the prime scoring areas, which is where we want to be. It is all about the quality of chances on goal.

“I am playing on the same line as Peter Szabo, which I did the start of last season, so I know a lot of his plays. Vladimir Kutny has slotted in well and it is fun playing with those guys.”

Miller’s form so far has come after a shortened pre-season for the 30-year-old, as he looks to regain momentum after a summer of fitness work in the gym.

He added: “It is nice to start so well, especially after I had a bit of injury trouble at training camp. I put a lot of work in over the summer, so it is good to feel the benefit of that.

“Everyone worked hard over the summer, to get in better shape, and there is a hunger to improve on last season. We won two trophies last time out, but we want the treble now.”

That challenge for honours continues this weekend, when Telford travel to face Hull Pirates on Saturday, before the visit of Basingstoke Bison on Sunday.

Miller, who spent almost three seasons with the Bison, believes both of this weekend’s opponents could challenge The Tigers’ EPL title ambitions.

“We will see the respective styles of Hull and Basingstoke’s this weekend, but it is too early to say where they’re likely to finish,” he said.

“We lost one last weekend, but we started in the same way last year. In the end, we went on a big run of wins through the Christmas months.

“We’re looking to do the same and challenge in every competition.”

Sunday’s game against Basingstoke Bison, at Telford Ice Rink, faces off at 6pm.
