JLMC: ‘Power of 10’ players named for development camp

Last week JLMC Chair, Jacqueline Pye, announced another new initiative for junior players but this time she enrolled the support of the England National Team Programme to help join-up the junior section with the EIHA’s Elite Player Pathway.

Ben Pitchley, the England Head Coach has today announced his selections for the first Power of Ten development camp which will take place at Ice Sheffield on Thursday 22nd December. Pitchley invited the Head Coach of each of the four U11 Conference Teams to select 11 2006 players and make a recommendation for their players inclusion in the camp. Those selections were made over the week-end and today the names of those players is published for the first time.

Part of the current England National Team elite player pathway is the development of players from Conference standard into future England players and then onto GB players. The gap between Conference and England is a big gap and this is often underestimated by younger players. One of the main aims of the Power of Ten programme is that it has been designed to provide players with an experience of taking part at an England training and selection event and thereby work towards highlighting the gap between Conference and England early in the development of the players.

During the course of the 12 hour day, the Power of Ten event will expose all of the players to the same training and testing that the current England squad players at U13, U14 and U15 programme, are put through. Although this is NOT an England selection camp, and there will be no England coaches sitting in the stands taking notes on players, this camp will be as close to an England camp as the JLMC can get to and it will consist of the best 44 players in the 2006 age group. Players can expect to be put through an England day of on ice, off ice, and classroom education sessions. Whilst the Coaches will not be selecting a team, players taking part will be part of a team and they will play in a high-temp challenge game at the end of the camp.

Jacqueline Pye was very quick to make the decision on the new programme and said. “If this event is successful the programme might be extended and additional opportunities provided although at this stage there are no guarantees.” She went on to say. “There’s a review of the elite pathway being carried out at this time and we need to make sure that we do not compromise ourselves given the resources we have at our disposal. I want the staff to deliver their programmes and not dilute the good work that they have already committed to.”

The day has been devised to consist of some seminars and workshops specifically for parents where they will be informed about rest periods, hydration, nutrition and strength and conditioning for their young athletes.
